Belief sometimes requires a sprinkle of irrationality, but the main ingredients are progress and improvement.
- You gain confidence when you see evidence and tangible progress.
- You see tangible progress when you practice regularly, fail, and repeat it until getting it right becomes second nature to you.
I was the only person in my class who failed second grade, and that was mostly because of Math.
After that year, I promised myself I would never fail school again. I studied Math almost everyday, practiced, practiced, and practiced some more until I eventually fell in love with it.
I achieve first place in Math Olympiads in high school, tutored calculus, and even became an engineer.
I wouldn't have achieved that without the confidence and belief I built in myself.
### Here's what I learned about building confidence:
1. **Master the fundamentals:** Mastering the fundamentals strengthens every skill you develop thereafter.
2. **Practice:** The more you practice, the more natural it feels and more familiar you become with it.
3. **Fail:** To improve, you have to fail. Failure serves as an error correction mechanism. If you aren’t failing, there's no room for improvement.
4. **Learn from failure:** You can only improve if you become aware of where you failed and find a way to avoid it next time. Failing is how you learn what you don’t know.
5. **Know what to practice:** Knowing what to focus on is just as important as the act itself. Make sure you're concentrating on the 20% of the effort that will give you 80% of the results.
6. **Grow to love what you do:** When your heart is in it, enduring challenges becomes rewarding, not a burden.
In the age of AI, you have all the tools to make progress and improvement in your own kitchen.
